Iowa Autumn Back Roads

The hills and valleys in Iowa, along the Des Moines River in central Iowa and along the Mississippi River in the northeast are unlike the rest of the state in the fall.

Corn harvest is a busy season, and for those who take a break, the tapestry of the season is created by the variety of trees.

Crossing the creek

Years ago, when I first started driving, the road up the Des Moines River crossed this creek here. I don't recall that it was ever dry, but never drier than what it is this year. The tracks across the bottom of the photo, show where someone used this abandoned road to cross the creek between Dayton and Stratford, Iowa.
