Indian Hills, Nux Baa Ga Trail on Lake Sakakawea
Honoring the Culture, Farms, and Homes Lost to the Rising Waters of Lake Sakakawea as the Missouri River Flooded with the Construction of the Garrison Dam in 1953. Nux Baa Ga Trail at Indian Hills, North Dakota
A mid summer drive west of Garrison and White Shield, North Dakota brought us to the northern shores of Lake Sakakawea at Indian Hills Resort and Recreation area. An area open to the public through the partnership of a privately owned resort, North Dakota Parks and Recreation, and Three Tribes (MHA Nation) this area boasts not only a marina with excellent boating and fishing opportunities, camping facilities, private homes, and the Nux Baa Ga (a single track trail for hiking and bicycling). A picnic area and shelter marks the trail head. Informational displays note the historic significance of the area, especially the location of the town of Elbowoods, now at the bottom of the lake, and the old Four Bears Bridge. Construction of the Garrison Dam in 1953 flooded this Missouri River area, which resulted in the demise of many towns and much rich agricultural land along with the relocation of thousands of people from their homes.
