Badlands Ride

Still friendly. Still scenic -- especially on a summer Sunday afternoon.
Ten years ago, the highways of western ND were relatively open and carefree for travelers. Then the Bakken Boom increased traffic; motorcycles were reluctant to get in to the middle of a semi-truck sandwich.
Now, highways are calming down, and a Sunday afternoon ride south of Watford City on Hwy 85 is an open opportunity for bikers to travel some of the most beautiful country in the region, and extend the traditional left-hand low-hand wave.

  • The slope of the Badlands that face south toward the winter sun stay relatively free of snow all winter. From the Long X road to the CCC campground, south of Watford City, the horizontal rails in the fence are repeated in the layers of the bluffs on the other side of the Little Missouri River
