Little Missouri River Meanders Through Emerald Green Badlands

Leaving the luxury of a state highway and heading out on gravel/scoria backroads most often yields the most stunning vistas to be found! Mid summer, south of Watford City and north of Grassy Butte in western North Dakota, the (now) low Little Missouri River takes it's time as it makes a turn east towards it's final destination, the Mighty Missouri River. Follow the Long X Road west, off of the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway, otherwise known as the CanAm Highway or US Highway 85, to discover the CCC Campground and trailhead for the Maah Daah Hey Trail and the Long X Trail.
