Horses abound in western North Dakota and eastern Montana, both on ranches and in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park (these are feral horses, sometimes termed as wild).

Over 100 horses live freely in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota. Descendants of horses which once roamed the area, mostly from ranches and perhaps even from Sitting Bull's herd, they are one of the major attractions of the park.
