Bull Bison at the Oxbow b x w

This bull bison was at rest in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park near the Oxbow Overlook when we stopped to visit with him. Yes. He had something to say! We headed his warning and drove away.

  • Spring has not yet turned the hillsides green, but bison still graze through the dead stand to get to the tender young shoots below.
  • The shaggy coats of bison are apparent in that short time between winter and summer when they still have their winter coats.
  • From about 10 feet away, it's easy to see the texture of the prized buffalo hide, the leather that kept people warm for hundreds of years.
  • The yearling on the left has not yet gotten a mature coat that will be much darker
